Hello, I’m Charlie. I’ve been passionate about VFX since age 9, when I watched a documentary about how they made Star Wars (before that I wanted to be a wizard). I find the process of creating images and problem solving to be engaging and fulfilling. I am interested in working as a 3D generalist but also have a keen interest in lighting and environments.

What was your inspiration for pursuing a career in VFX?

I’ve been interested in a career in VFX after seeing the huge worlds and lifelike characters created in films like Blade Runner and District 9. I found VFX to be the best path into creating my own films with no budget or crew so I grew my skill set from there.

What hobbies do you have?

In my free time I enjoy photography, making music and cooking.

How would your peers describe you in 3 words?

Artistic, Determined, Tall

Do you have any industry experience? If so, please give a concise explanation of the experience.

Last summer, I had the opportunity to spend 8 weeks working on a live project as part of the Framestore Launchpad Internship in the environments department.
In the time since I have been working at The Flying Colour Company alongside uni as a 3D Generalist.

How would you describe your contribution to your group project?

As the director on our group project, I have been responsible for making creative decisions, as well as talking with artists and our producer to ensure that we meet deadlines and deliver a high standard of work.
I have also been the lead lighting artist on this project, matching lighting to the plate and supplementing the on set lighting with additional CG lights to create a polished and cinematic look.

What lessons did you learn from undertaking your project that you'll take with you into your career?

During this project, I have learned a lot about managing a team and how to give and receive feedback and criticism.
I have also pushed myself to learn more about lighting and how to create a robust colour management pipeline.
It has also tested my time management skills, working on this project alongside a specialism and working as a 3D Generalist 2 days per week.

What would your ideal first role in the industry be?

I would like to work as a 3D Generalist or Lighting Artist in any size studio. I think working in advertising would be fun since I’m keen to work on many projects and learn as much as I can.

What's an achievement from the past 3 years that you're proud of?

I’m very proud of being selected for the Framestore Launchpad Internship last summer. It was a great opportunity to learn about what it’s like to work in a large studio and the culture surrounding the industry. It was also a great opportunity to speak to some incredibly talented artists and receive constant feedback on my work.
