Hi, I'm Harry. A compositing student here at Escape, with a background in film production and photography stemming from college, I decided to pursue 2D VFX. I'm very technical and organised and enjoy solving complex creative challenges. I have a sweet spot for project management and production too. Currently I'm working at Vine FX as a studio runner and my long term career aspiration is to work my way up the ranks of a 2D department.

What was your inspiration for pursuing a career in VFX?

The biggest inspiration for me to pursue VFX was watching Framestore's breakdown of Avengers: Infinity War and being blown away initally by all the 3D work involved, then as I explored VFX more I really fell in love with Nuke and decided that node-based compositing suited the way my brain works best, also a compositing mentor I had from ACCESS:VFX called Alexandre Marlier-Fuentes, who really helped me understand the career I wanted to pursue in a 2D department.

What hobbies do you have?

Outside of 2D VFX, my main hobbies are Photography. This stems back from doing it at GCSE, but massively contributes to developing my eye for detail when compositing. It also encourages me to get out and explore new locations and conditions to capture material that could act as reference material. I also enjoy playing football, notably 5-a-side, as it is high energy and fast paced. It is also good fun to win as a team. Darts is another sport I enjoy playing because I'm technical and numbers are quite satisfying to work with trying to work out the combinations when you're checking out to win a leg. Then a more niche hobby of mine would be personal finance and investing, since I find it to be a unique conversation topic with many people and it can be a bit of a number game and adheres to my problem-solving nature.

How would your peers describe you in 3 words?

Patient, Dedicated, Motivated

Do you have any industry experience? If so, please give a concise explanation of the experience.

I have been working at Vine FX since November as a runner, supporting all departments with delivering TV series whilst also helping complete quality checks of roto mattes, prep and paint work, as well as camera matchmoves. I also have worked on a handful of freelance projects as a compositor and an on-set VFX supervisor.

How would you describe your contribution to your group project?

In the short film project, 'D.A.N.S', I worked as a compositor, providing roto mattes, comping 2D and 3D CG assets like the robot and the cat graffiti in the background of the 2nd shot and acting on feedback from peers and tutors to deliver high quality work. As for the 'Outpatient' project, I was a compositor again and I took on the role of producer where I managed the project from start to delivery. Our focus on both was to closely follow industry pipelines and push ourselves to deliver photo-real work.

What lessons did you learn from undertaking your project that you'll take with you into your career?

The most important lesson I've learnt is that your work is just professional, don't get personal, defensive or attached to your work, particularly when it comes to cutting shots, re-assigning tasks, or a creative vision changing. The best you can do is listen intently and act on all direction and feedback to produce the best quality work and tell the story of the film your working on.

What would your ideal first role in the industry be?

Having spent some time as a runner, the next step for me would be a prep/paint role or even moving into junior compositing. I'd be excited to take on an array of projects in TV and Film in an environment where I would be supported to develop my compositing 'eye'.

What's an achievement from the past 3 years that you're proud of?

VFX related, a personal achievement I'm proud of from the last three years is seeing 'Outpatient' win 'Best Short' at 'The International Gold Awards'. Outside of VFX, my biggest achievement has been raising my first born alongside my partner and passing my driving test.
