What was your inspiration for pursuing a career in VFX?
Watching my older cousin make animations as a small child really captivated me, and I thought it looked amazing. As I grew up, I became interested in more methods of digital creation, such as making video games - I dabbled with a few softwares such as Unity, and Blender; finding the 3D workflow really fun and relaxing. Later on, seeing Infinity War was really inspiring, with how realistic Thanos looked despite being fully CGI. It made me want to create something like that, I'd be very proud to have made something of such a high quality.
What hobbies do you have?
I've always liked drawing and sketching, and enjoy making 3D artwork and animations in my free time too. Some of my other hobbies include ice skating, playing the piano, and e-sports - I really enjoy the competitive aspect.
How would your peers describe you in 3 words?
Technical, Creative, Proactive
Do you have any industry experience? If so, please give a concise explanation of the experience.
In November 2019, I started an Internship at Earth London TV, an accomplished creative motion design and VFX studio. Unfortunately due to the Covid lockdown, it ended in March 2020, but I picked up a lot of skills and software experience, helping with CG graphics for the Gold Rush: White Water TV show in C4D, working on motion graphics for advertisements, and programming in the node-based interactive multimedia processing software TouchDesigner, for game shows. I gained valuable team working and industry experience too.
How would you describe your contribution to your group project?
My role in 'X-Terminate' was Character & Asset Modelling, and Texture Artist, though I helped out with lots of other things too. As a character modeller, I had to adapt design sketches into 3D, while keeping to the desired style we were looking for. It was interesting bringing somebody else's design idea to life - as I progressed, I started to see it as my own too and take a lot of pride in it. It involved a lot of checking references and moodboards to make sure I wasn't straying from the desired feel. I also rendered and lit one shot, and modelled and textured some secondary assets, as well as setting up a lot of the shaders in our group. I'm happy with my contribution, I think it was valuable and helpful.
What lessons did you learn from undertaking your project that you'll take with you into your career?
A lesson I'll carry forwards in my career is how relatively relaxed this project felt towards the end, as opposed to panicked and rushed, because we front-loaded rendering early on in the project. This gave 2D time to work with our renders and give feedback/make requests for re-renders, which we then had plenty of time to provide. I'll certainly aim to begin rendering early in future, so there isn't such a stressful cram near the end of the project, which can also risk sub-par results on the deadline.
What would your ideal first role in the industry be?
I'd like to work for a large studio, either as a runner, a 3D generalist, or even a sculptor - it'd be a great starting foothold, which would allow me to meet and learn from really skilled artists, and also over time, move up in the ranks and secure myself a really good position. It'd also mean I'd be working on some really interesting projects, and when they were completed and released I'd be able to say with pride that I helped create them.
What's an achievement from the past 3 years that you're proud of?
To be honest, I'm most proud of my current group project, 'X-Terminate'. I think it looks amazing and I'm really proud of how my robot model looks front and center. It taught me a lot about problem solving and meeting deadlines early. I hope to stay in touch with everyone on my group, as they're all really likeable too, and there's a lot of good chemistry.
