Hi there, my name is Rianna. I am an aspiring Creature/Game Animator! Animation is something that I grew to love from watching Pixar and Disney films; the moment I realised it was an actual career I could go into, I began researching and finding opportunities to learn about animation. Now here I am, in my final year at Escape Studios! Seeing the different styles of character/creature animation motivates me to create work of that style and constantly improve! Creature animation is what I want to do as a career, whether it be for a VFX or game studio!

What was your inspiration for pursuing a career in Animation?

Watching animated films from a young age was always something I enjoyed. However, the moment I decided animation was the career I wanted to go into was when I watched the film 'Up'. The way the characters were animated and the emotions felt when seeing the heartbreaking expressions/actions were something I wished I could create in animation as well. I decided to pursue animation so I could create scenes like that, being able to convey emotions through animation to an audience!

What hobbies do you have?

I love reading, especially fantasy books - visualising the world of the book, the characters and the scenery is always something enjoyable; it helps my creative thinking too!
I used to swim competitively and dance professionally during High school. Now, I swim as a hobby as it's fun and helps me relax.

How would your peers describe you in 3 words?

Creative, Steadfast, Helpful

Do you have any industry experience? If so, please give a concise explanation of the experience.

I have not yet worked for a studio, but I have attended webinars and online sessions that companies and people from the industry have hosted, where they've shared knowledge and discussed things about the creative world. These sessions and discussions that I have experienced from people in the industry have helped me understand the level of work expected of a Junior Animator and beyond that.

How would you describe your contribution to your group project?

For the project 'D.A.N.S', my role was the animator for two of the shots. When our group began creating ideas for the film, I helped brainstorm with them and develop some of their ideas so the story became more concrete and could flow well. I helped someone develop the final story; I suggested how the robot will feel human emotions through the CD, suggesting a certain pacing so it makes sense.

What lessons did you learn from undertaking your project that you'll take with you into your career?

An animation is never 'finished'. Throughout my projects, I've never stopped getting feedback, even once I have submitted the shots I have done. We all have a timeframe to complete a shot; it can be 'finished' for the time we had to complete it, but it is never fully finished. There are always certain poses and slight movements we can continue to improve on and tweak; that is the beauty of animation. We constantly improve our skills and adapt our work even after years of experience.

What would your ideal first role in the industry be?

I would love to work as a Junior Creature Animator for a game or VFX studio. I would learn more skills and techniques as a junior animator and understand how to work in a proper studio environment. I want to work in both VFX and games as they require different animation methods, which would be interesting to learn about in a studio. This role would help me progress into becoming a Lead Animator in the future, as that is my main goal.

What's an achievement from the past 3 years that you're proud of?

Last year for the two animation group projects, I took on the role of the Lead Animator and Producer. I learnt a lot about these roles and made a few mistakes, but I learnt from them for next time. Since my goal is to be a Lead Animator, I am glad I took the opportunity to take on this role for a couple of my group projects. I was very proud of how I managed the projects and researched the role and how to be a Lead Animator.
