Hi! I'm Samun. I love animation because it allows me to turn a thought into motion. The way of exploring new concepts to enhance the character's personality. As a kid, I loved watching anime - the visuals of this genre kickstarted endless thoughts of how the artist created the characters with lines and colours. I want to work in the animation department because of the journey of creating a story where the viewer can resonate.

What was your inspiration for pursuing a career in Animation?
Ever since I saw 'Howl's Moving Castle' directed by Miyazaki, I was captured by his way of expressing the character, their stories, and the way they moved. It struck me - It was an eye-opener. He was a big inspiration for me pursuing a career as an animator. I want to achieve the same feelings as he did me, for other people.
What hobbies do you have?
As mentioned, I still love watching Anime because it draws me into the exciting story, extraordinary characters and imaginative worlds. This genre pushes deep themes and emotions that I can somewhat relate to. I also love to cook, experimenting with different ingredients to create tasty food. Both Anime and Cooking allow me to express, explore and enjoy.
How would your peers describe you in 3 words?
Patient, Detail-oriented, Easy Going
Do you have any industry experience? If so, please give a concise explanation of the experience.
I have attended a Bafta Event, where I have networked with people in the film industry. Learning about their story, how they started, what their current projects were, and their future views on their business.
How would you describe your contribution to your group project?
In Fathers' Blade, I took on the role of an FX lead and Animator. From the start of my previous project - Void, I was interested in simulation and effects. Therefore, for this project, I wanted to learn about Unreal Engine 5's Niagara systems, which paid off as the learning process was fun and rewarding. I also animated the scene where the villain kicks the boy, the boy putting away the telescope - this was very exciting as I could see the progression of how I have developed my skills as an animator
What lessons did you learn from undertaking your project that you'll take with you into your career?
One big lesson I would take away is to find or film my own references, even if it is a minor action. Taking reference, I can spot minute details from the shoulder, chest, neck, head, etc. and that overall enhances the motion of the character to become more human-like.
What would your ideal first role in the industry be?
I would love to start as a Generalist, as I love to learn about the different processes in a production. I also enjoy problem-solving; dissecting what the problem is and finding a workaround is the best feeling. The thrill of becoming a helping hand to others is what drives me. By learning different things, I can develop my overall skills as a 3D Artist.
What's an achievement from the past 3 years that you're proud of?
For the past three years. I’m happy with the progress I've made in many different fields: animation, lighting, FX, UE5 / C4d, 3D modelling, ZBrush and Substance Painter.
One thing in particular was in the project 'Void', I helped with the cats' scribbled entrance. That part was really fun to explore. I used the curve pen to draw a circle, then tried duplicating and animating the size. After that, I changed the rotation and scale to get the texture I attached the brush to the curve, and then I converted the brush into polygons. In the end, the result was better than expected.
