I am a versatile and curious person and I have a knack for Maths and Arts. My interests have led me to deep dive into Physically Based Render materials and shading during my time at Escape Studios while remaining well-rounded in every aspect of creating a 3D asset. I enjoy observing and recreating photorealistic materials, as well as learning their physical properties and I am passionate about creating visually stunning environments. I want to start my career journey as a Material Artist/Surface Artist, or Environment Artist.

GET TO KNOW CLAUDIO

What was your inspiration for pursuing a career in Game Art?
When I became an adult, I pursued a different career, but my fascination for video games continued, as I kept myself engaged in multiple genres and expanded my knowledge, adding a basic understanding of game mechanics and game theory. During the pandemic, I started teaching myself the basics of 3D Art with the help of Udemy and YouTube. After a while my wife, showed me the Escape Studios curriculum and I understood the course would teach me the skills required to achieve my aspirations much better than I could do on my own. It was at that moment I took a leap of faith and committed to the career change.
What hobbies do you have?
Photography, playing board games and video games, painting miniatures. My hobbies are a nice distraction from my daily routine, yet they relate to and empower my love for art and games. Furthermore, by practicing these hobbies I have met amazing people, some of whom have become lifelong friends.
How would your peers describe you in 3 words?
Reliable, Diligent, Kind
Do you have any industry experience? If so, please give a concise explanation of the experience.
In 2023, I was Texture Artist as part of a team of students helping Stefano Ferron produce an independent movie. My collaboration lasted about a month, where I created a couple of tileable textures, textured a few unique assets, and researched how to implement a shader for one of the VFX of the movie. For the last three years, I have been practicing photography and, whilst my career in the field is not strictly related to 3D Art, I worked as an independent photojournalist for multiple public and private events, including "Pride in London", Notting Hill Festival, Diwali and WASD. During this time I have also worked as a BTS photographer for Fabio D'Andrea in his music video "Hope Reborn", who recommended me to Gena West for a photo shoot at the DKMS Gala.
How would you describe your contribution to your group project?
I was a Material Artist and PR Manager for the project "The Last Shanty".
My contributions include studying the style of "Wayfinder", the game we were inspired by, and producing tileable textures and smart materials in the style, while sharing guidelines, insights, workflows, and detailed breakdowns of my texturing process.
As a PR Manager, I was responsible for sharing weekly updates of the projects on LinkedIn, reaching out to Artists for feedback, and reaching out to Jeremy Estrellado to showcase our project.
What lessons did you learn from undertaking your project that you'll take with you into your career?
I was surprised by the amount of details and colour variations the artists were using in their assets, while maintaining their readability. The apparent simplicity of the style proved to be more challenging to recreate than initially appeared.
In the future, when working on a stylised project, I will factor the time required to learn the techniques the artists used, along with the nuances and rules of the style I am recreating.
What would your ideal first role in the industry be?
My ideal role would be to start as a Material Artist for a video game studio or a VFX company.
The role would allow me to continue to expand my skills within the field, while also continuing to improve my overall 3D skills.
Alternatively, I could see myself working as an Environment Artist for a video game studio, or mentoring aspiring 3D artists.
What's an achievement from the past 3 years that you're proud of?
Receiving an IMDB credit for working with Stefano Ferrron is the highlight of the past three years, along with having one of my pictures published as part of an online article.
Working with Stefano and his team reinforced the idea that teamwork is paramount to finding and implementing solutions to difficult problems with the aim of fulfilling a director's vision.
During this experience, I was also reminded how important it is to borrow expertise from people from different backgrounds and disciplines.
