Hello reader! I'm Daniel Griffiths, a 3D artist with a passion for all things video games. They’ve been a big part of my life since I was gifted one of the old brick Gameboys as a child. After so many years playing games, I’ve now embarked on the journey of making them and leaving my personal mark on this fascinating art form. My strongest skillset is in creating game ready 3D assets with a focus on weapons and environments.

What was your inspiration for pursuing a career in Game Art?
I've always had a passion for creating art, but never considered pursuing it professionally - That was until I was made redundant back in 2020. After that I decided to take the plunge into getting skilled up for a career in the creative industries. I found game art after joining Escape Studios and have been enthralled in the discipline ever since.
What hobbies do you have?
I enjoy immersing myself in horror stories, whether that be in books, films, or games. Some of my favourites are the novel “The Desert” by Bryon Morrigan and John Carpenters film “The Thing”. When I’m not scaring myself stupid, I like to go hiking in the hills with my dog & husband. Getting away from the city and surrounding myself with nature is a surefire way to refill the creative energy.
How would your peers describe you in 3 words?
Enthusiastic, Inspirational and Fun
Do you have any industry experience? If so, please give a concise explanation of the experience.
Unfortunately I haven’t had experience within the video game industry as yet, my time at Escape has been focused on nailing the fundamentals. In the past I've had experience across a breadth of industries from the military to IT. For a few years I had the opportunity to organise and run airsoft events for a company. This was my first introduction to game design and had a lot of constraints to work within coupled with the unpredictability of players. It was extremely satisfying to see people enjoying the experiences I had crafted, especially when it involved lots of pyrotechnics!
How would you describe your contribution to your group project?
For 'Nomads Rest', I took on the role of 3D Generalist. I like having the opportunity to work on a variety of things and exposing myself to new challenges. This was my first stylized project, which involved a very different approach to designing and making the assets for the scene compared to my previous projects. My other team members had a bit more experience with this and I learned a lot from them on how to produce assets for this art style.
What lessons did you learn from undertaking your project that you'll take with you into your career?
My biggest lesson from this project is that no matter how insurmountable the problem may be, if you work together as a team, you can overcome any challenge. We were one of the smallest teams to work on a project and were a bit daunted at the start. These fears fell behind quite quickly as we pooled our skills together and created something that we were all happy with.
What would your ideal first role in the industry be?
My ideal first role would be working in an indie studio as I enjoy working in small teams and exposing myself to new workflows and ideas. As I’m still very wet behind the ears in this industry I feel like that sort of environment would provide the best way to strengthen my skillset.
What's an achievement from the past 3 years that you're proud of?
Last year for our first group project, I took on the role of producer as there weren’t any volunteers. It was a big challenge as I’d never had to manage a project of that complexity and I wasn’t very confident in my own asset creation skills either. Over the weeks, I learned a lot about scheduling and providing feedback on the assets the team was producing. We ran into lots of obstacles, but I enjoyed coming up with solutions to keep the project moving forward.
