GET TO KNOW EDEN
What was your inspiration for pursuing a career in Game Art?
My brother-in-law, who was working on a video game for his ICT A-Level. That was the first time I realised that there were people responsible behind making the games I loved playing!
What hobbies do you have?
Playing the drums, going to the gym, and playing golf with my flatmate! These activities help me relax, and I also like how much movement and exercise they involve as this is not something I always get throughout a working day.
How would your peers describe you in 3 words?
Leader, Kind and Helpful!
Do you have any industry experience? If so, please give a concise explanation of the experience.
I haven't had any direct experience in the industry yet, but my experience leading group projects at Escape, as well as my constant talks with industry mentors and participation in industry events, makes me a candidate who will quickly be able to pick up any work required of me.
How would you describe your contribution to your group project?
In the project 'The Deserter' my role was to be the Art Director. Finding the project's Art Direction was a unique challenge, as we had to strike a balance between taking inspiration from sources like 'Star Wars', without feeling like we were directly copying it. Ultimately we were able to solve this problem - firstly by breaking down Star Wars' art style and working out what made something 'feel' like Star Wars. Then we introduced influences from places like Morocco and Brazilian Favellas, as well as more purposeful greebling, to offset the Star Wars vibes. These influences really helped separate our art style from our initial influences, and ultimately made the project feel much more unique!
What lessons did you learn from undertaking your project that you'll take with you into your career?
One lesson from undertaking this project that I will carry with me into my career is 'plan, plan and plan again' What I mean by this is that if you use pre-production effectively, and throughout the project, you continuously evaluate your plans and adjust them accordingly, a project can become a million times more manageable.
What would your ideal first role in the industry be?
I would love to start off as a 3D Environment Artist at a studio where I can learn and grow quickly from all the talented artists around me. My end goal is to be an Art Director, so I want to work hard and make a clear progression towards that from my first day.
What's an achievement from the past 3 years that you're proud of?
One of the achievements I am proudest of is my progression as an artist. I feel like I have made huge strides in both my technical abilities as well as my soft skills, making me a better artist as well as a better teammate and leader. The friends I have made along this three year journey are to thank for that, and I wouldn't have been able to improve nearly as much without them.
