What was your inspiration for pursuing a career in Game Art?
I always wanted to learn how to translate my 2D work into 3D and add 3D software to my list of skills. I love picking up new skills and learning how to create through different mediums. Building a strong portfolio and seeing my improvement as an artist are my driving forces for wanting to pursue a career in the creative industry.
What hobbies do you have?
Most of my hobbies involve creative elements; from digital art to costume making, freestyle dance and acting to writing poetry and non-fiction. I love to create stories, characters, and worlds, and grew up with a love of film and gaming which has shaped my hobbies and career path to this day. My interests largely focus on wildlife and creature design, and I love to creatively apply my background in biology and veterinary work to my art through 2D and 3D mediums. I love making new creatures.
How would your peers describe you in 3 words?
Adaptable, Determined, Resourceful
Do you have any industry experience? If so, please give a concise explanation of the experience.
I have very limited experience at the moment with working directly in the industry, but I have extensive experience working as a freelance digital artist, including understanding the importance of advertising, communication with clients, finding clients, and using social media to promote work. I'm looking forward to bringing 3D into my growing list of skills to bring clients' visions to life.
How would you describe your contribution to your group project?
My work is flexible and I like to help other teams in different parts of the project. I like to apply my creative ideas to projects within reason and work collaboratively with the art director to create interesting and useful props and materials to fit the environment. I have a solid understanding of art style and the importance of coherency throughout a game or story, which I take extra effort to incorporate into my work.
What lessons did you learn from undertaking your project that you'll take with you into your career?
One lesson that I learned from the group project was that there is no problem too big to solve, and attempting to tackle every hurdle on your own only creates more problems. It's perfectly acceptable to ask for help and use advice to carry your work forward. I always readily accept critiques of my work, but have also learned to ask for help when I am stuck.
What would your ideal first role in the industry be?
Initially I'd love to join the industry as a 3D Generalist, Prop or Material Artist, but I thrive best in multi-disciplinary environments, where my work can reflect on a range of different skills. Realistic or stylised, foliage, sculpted or hard surface, I have no limits on what I am willing to learn and would love a role that pushes me to learn new things.
What's an achievement from the past 3 years that you're proud of?
My proudest achievements have been learning to utilise Substance Designer to make realistic and stylised textures. I had a lot of difficulties initially learning and understanding node-based programs, and have since overcome this obstacle and am proud of the materials I can produce.
