GET TO KNOW ETHAN
What was your inspiration for pursuing a career in this industry?
I have always been interested in films and games since I was little and thought if I was going to get a job I genuinely loved it would be in this industry.
What hobbies do you have?
I tend to play a lot of Co-Operative games with friends, as I like working as a team to achieve objectives, which is why I tend to play these more often than singleplayer games. I also enjoy social events with friends and family, like going out for meals or drinks, or other activities like the cinema, as I value my relationships with those around me.
How would your peers describe you in 3 words?
Hard working, Dedicated and Knowledgeable
Do you have any industry experience? If so, please give a concise explanation of the experience.
I've had a weeks work experience as a runner at Studio B where I helped with lighting, props and general research for some of their up and coming projects. In this time I got to learn a lot of new ways to create effects in short form content, and how they operate as a studio.
I also currently work as a producer at Cellcast, who do live TV. I operate cameras, as well as work with channel mixers to ensure the production goes along smoothly. This has also allowed me to learn how to work to a timely bases while on live productions as well as how to work with people in front of the camera too.
How would you describe your contribution to your group project?
I mainly did environment modelling while facilitating the role of FX Artist.
When creating the environments, the Art bible indicated they wanted to go for model houses based on Bromley Croft doll houses, so my modelling was very focused on that look.
Along side my asset modelling, all the destruction effects were created by me using Houdini and their RBD workflow. This is something I have always wanted to try and I believe this project was a nice way of trying it out.
What lessons did you learn from undertaking your project that you'll take with you into your career?
Having a contingency plan on a contingency plan is nice way of working and I think that would be how I manage my time in the future. This is because if I don't need the time, I can then ask for more work, but if I am at a deadline, I am then holding other artists up.
What would your ideal first role in the industry be?
My ideal first job would have been a Technical Assistant role for a Houdini pipeline as I found it interesting to work within and had written my own code for Houdini using Python.
What's an achievement from the past 3 years that you're proud of?
I was most proud of 'Papercut' in my third year at Escape, as I was the 3D Lead of the project and it came out really well and looked great. It was the first time we had designed anything resembling origami. All the team were good and worked hard to get the project done.
