I’m Sebastian Petre, an animation student specializing in rigging. I mostly enjoy solving technical issues and bringing characters to life. I particularly like creating small scripts to automate repeatable tasks and working in more than one platform, having to figure out how to link the process as efficiently as possible. Personally I’m passionate about video games, having played them since early childhood as such I wish to enter the games industry.

What was your inspiration for pursuing a career in this industry?

I both enjoy playing and working on games. Through an animation point of view, I find animation and rigging for games to be more technical and engaging for a person like me. I always get to learn new things and think about what is the optimal method of achieving my goals. Reviewing my work is also pleasing as games require active user input, which means that I get to play with what I've made in order to gauge its quality.

What hobbies do you have?

In my free time, I enjoy taking on small programming projects. I mainly automate tasks inside Maya while also writing time-saving scripts. What I enjoy most about scripting is that feedback is direct and objective, encouraging logical thinking while also sharpening my problem solving skills.

How would your peers describe you in 3 words?

Cautious, Resourceful, Determined

Do you have any industry experience? If so, please give a concise explanation of the experience.

I don’t have any direct experience, but I have attended seminars and I talked with industry professionals, who gave me advice and feedback on where to improve. As such, I am optimistic that I will be able to provide good results on whatever it will be required of me.

How would you describe your contribution to your group project?

I was responsible for the rigs within the project, including iteratively updating them to correct issues and improve user experience, while also managing the 2D and 3D elements of our characters, which utilised both to help create the desired style

Alongside this, I also worked on my share of animations from the shot needing to keep in mind the stylistic traits we wanted to convey.

What lessons did you learn from undertaking your project that you'll take with you into your career?

In this project, I learned the most about how to work like a programmer. Recognising patterns and figuring out how to automate them. Through snipping documents, separating alembics and automating rigging, I managed to turn weeks of work into hours.

What would your ideal first role in the industry be?

I both enjoy working as a rigger and an animator, so I would love to work as either one of them or both. Despite finding it hard to express my passion for animation verbally, I enjoy it just as much as rigging, being very stimulating, creatively speaking.

What's an achievement from the past 3 years that you're proud of?

Last year, I designed, modeled and rigged a 3D character by myself. I’m proud of it as it represents the liberty in the 3D field that I cultivated for myself through years of learning. It was time consuming and filled with small problems, but I can’t wait to do a project like this again and see the quality of the characters I make improve with time.
